When I (Kim) was starting out in the field, I needed to come up with a name that I believed would represent what I wanted the business to be. The name (DOE-hass) comes from Gaelic, meaning “hope”. Although I am proudly, fully Canadian, as with most of us, I’m a Heinz 57 (a blend of a bunch of cultures), so this is a nod to my Irish roots. It’s also a nod to my mom. She and I used to share a series of books and, in one of them, the name of a shelter was Dochas. I didn’t realize this until after I chose the name and found it in the book. Weird. But I like to think it’s a sign.

So, that’s where Dochas started, with a nod to my roots and a belief in the power of hope. It’s my goal to be that safe space where you can come just as you are and be welcome. Anyone who works here shares that vision.

From those small starts in 2016 to now, Dochas has grown into an amazing team of professionals (both administrative and psychological) who’s primary mission is for you to feel accepted for who you are in whatever moment you’re in. We work with you to discover your strengths, what’s getting in your way, and find the life you want to have. We are loyal, honest, genuine, determined, and, dare I say it, at times even fun! From the moment you call, you are no longer alone.

The truth is, in therapy there is no magic wand. It’s hard work. It works because of the relationship you build with your therapist which allows you to explore who you are and want to be. Not every therapist out there believes in this perspective. You have to pick the person who is right for you! You have the power here… this is why the site has profiles on the therapists. It gives you a brief sense of each one of us, so you can decide where you want to start.

Therapy can be scary. But it doesn’t have to be. If you have any questions, even if you aren’t sure you want to start, give Dochas a shout. We would be more than happy to talk with you!

Meet Kim

There. I said it. Going to see a stranger to confront emotions and admit you can’t do it alone anymore is intimidating. And then there’s the fear that someone else will know and judge you for it.
