I’d like to talk about Telehealth – doing virtual therapy instead of coming into our office. Amelia here with your weekly Dóchas blog post – let’s dive into some of the benefits!
You Can Do Telehealth From Your Safe Space
Depending on what you struggle with, sometimes meeting a new person in a new space can be very stressful. Telehealth allows you to talk to a new therapist in your safe space – you can even wear your pajamas! Not having to leave the house can remove accessibility issues as well – you don’t have to drive to the office or worry about transportation. Doing Telehealth also means you have access to your support at home, whether it is a stuffed animal, a pet that you can snuggle, or being in bed.
More Options to Find the Best Therapist For You
Sometimes you find a therapist online that you work well with, but they’re not in your area. Telehealth means this doesn’t have to be an issue – I see clients from all around Alberta who have decided they wanted to see the therapist with the coloured hair, and thanks to video sessions, we can make it happen. This also means that clients who usually see me in person can still see me while they are travelling around Alberta (I’m always jealous of clients who do their virtual sessions from the mountains).
Telehealth is Equally as Effective as In-Person Therapy
Many studies have found that virtual therapy is equally as effective as therapy in person – which means the same connection and support. The majority of therapy modalities (methods) can also be done virtually – for example, EMDR (Eye movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) can still be done, we just use tapping instead of eye movements.
Virtual therapy is also covered by benefits!
Telehealth Can Easily Fit Into Your Schedule
Maybe you work from home. Maybe you have kids and a wild schedule that makes it hard to fit in extra appointments. With Telehealth, you can still find support for your wellbeing at a time and place that works for you. I have clients who do Telehealth over their lunch hour, while their kids are napping, or when they are able to schedule in some down time into their day.
If you have any questions or want to look into trying Telehealth with one of our practitioners, please reach out to Dóchas at 780-446-0300 or info@dochaspsych.com. Book an in-person or virtual appointment with one of our therapists here.
