Psychological assessments for children: Signs your child may benefit from an evaluation

As a psychologist I often hear parents say that their child is struggling. They don’t know why, and they don’t know how to help. Sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between normal child behaviour and behaviour that’s indicative of larger issues that contribute to your child’s difficulties. Psychological assessments for children are suggested for a variety of reasons, but these signs will help you evaluate your child’s situation a little more clearly to determine whether this is the right path for them, and for you.

Signs your child may benefit from a psychological assessment

Consider the severity, frequency and duration of your child’s challenges, and whether their difficulties interrupt their ability to get through the day successfully.

It may be beneficial to consult with a professional if your child is struggling in any of the following areas:

  • Academic performance (reading, writing, math, etc.)
  • Inattention / hyperactivity
  • Memory
  • Processing
  • Motor delays
  • Language impairments
  • Executive functioning
  • Anxiety
  • Social interactions
  • Self-esteem
  • School avoidance

If you notice your child struggling in any of these areas, there are a few informal interventions you can take before reaching out to a professional. I encourage you to be curious and have an open conversation with your child to gain insight into their world, collaborate with their teachers, and work together to address the problem.

Examine whether these steps are working or not, and if you need further support, consider seeking a private psychoeducational assessment for your child.

A comprehensive psychoeducational assessment can give you more clarity on your child’s challenges and provide you with effective strategies to remediate those challenges.

Understanding psychological assessments for children: What are they?

A psychoeducational assessment offers an in-depth understanding of your child’s strengths and challenges, and it provides insight into why your child may be experiencing particular difficulties.

The assessment involves using standardized testing measures to evaluate cognitive functioning, academic achievement, as well as social/emotional and behavioural functioning. It also involves reviewing school records, observations and interviews.

The purpose of a psychological assessment

Psychological assessments for children is the first step to optimizing their overall success. This process can help parents and educators identify whether a child demonstrates challenges in areas such as learning disabilities, ADHD, anxiety, depression, information processing, fine/gross motor skills, speech and language skills, etc.

The assessment report can help inform appropriate educational programming and accommodations. In Alberta, if there is a diagnosis, the school often provides a code for additional funding that will help access resources and support. The school team will also create an individual program plan (IPP) that outlines academic, social, emotional, and behaviour goals, along with necessary modifications and support.

The benefits of psychological assessments for children

Whether you’re a parent or an educator, it’s not easy to watch a child struggle. A psychoeducational assessment can help you understand how your child learns best, how they process information, and what may be impeding their success.

This information can provide insight into how you can help your child optimize learning, reduce feelings of frustration, and increase confidence. Most importantly, though, an assessment can help you and your child effectively advocate for their needs.

If you have any questions regarding the assessment process, or you simply want to learn more information, I’m happy to help. Send us an email at info@dochaspsych.com and I will offer support in any way that I can.

Together, we can work towards maximizing your child’s success!
