Have you ever left a therapy session feeling like all you did was vent, without really addressing the root of your issues? It’s Imane on the blog this week, and I want to explore how you can shift towards holding yourself accountable for real change instead of just ranting to your therapist.
The Common Trap of Venting in Therapy
It’s not uncommon for clients to spend a lot of their session time just getting things off their chest. While venting can provide some immediate relief, it’s often a temporary fix that doesn’t lead to long-term progress. If you find yourself caught in a cycle of venting and moving from one crisis to the next, it’s time to consider a different approach.
Why Accountability Matters
In my practice, I focus on dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), which emphasizes accountability. This approach involves identifying the behaviours that are contributing to the problems in your life—not just what others are doing, but what you’re doing that impacts your situation. It’s about taking a hard look at yourself and being honest about the changes you need to make.
This shift in perspective—from focusing on what’s happening to you to what you can do about it—is powerful. It lets you take ownership of your healing process and make meaningful changes that extend beyond therapy.
How to Shift Your Therapy Sessions
Instead of using therapy solely as a space to unload, it can be more beneficial to use it as a tool for self-inquiry and growth. This means actively working on understanding your own patterns and behaviors and learning how to make positive changes. It’s not about blaming others; it’s about empowering yourself to take control of your life.
