Three Essentials for Better Mental Well-being

Did you know that there is a worldwide community dedicated to answering the question “How can we help people flourish in their lives”? The Center for Self-Determination Theory is comprised of scholars, researchers, and practitioners who want to see you thrive in all areas of your life, including your mental health. The concepts highlighted in this blog are rooted in what this community is focused on.

It’s Nyamal on the blog today. Let’s talk about psychological human needs essential for optimal human functioning – Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness. There was a time when I felt like I was on autopilot and in survival mode. I felt disconnected from myself and others and was not living in my element. Looking back, I realized that I was not meeting these three needs, which are fundamental to mental well-being.

Autonomy, competence, and relatedness are essential for good mental health

1. Autonomy

The first basic need we will discuss is autonomy, which can be confused with freedom or self-reliance. However, it has more to do with your actions and experiences being congruent with what you truly value and are interested in. In other words, you feel like you have a say or ownership over what happens in your life and are making choices that are genuinely important to you. Making values-based decisions can enhance your sense of autonomy.

2. Competence

The second need is competence; this is concerned with feeling capable and effective within the different areas in your life that matter to you. For example, you can set goals and achieve them, learn new skills, and overcome challenges. Overall, you feel like you are growing, and your efforts are acknowledged and recognized. Thus, focusing on your strengths is a great way to cultivate competence.

3. Relatedness

The third psychological need is relatedness, which is characterized as feeling socially connected and cared for. It is about community, belonging, and feeling significant. You can promote relatedness by nurturing meaningful relationships, volunteering with communities or agencies where you can feel connected, and building a supportive network that you can lean on through good and bad days.

After briefly reviewing these three components, take a deep breath and check in with yourself. When was the last time you felt empowered, accomplished, or connected? Consider one step you can take to enhance your autonomy, competence, or relatedness. Perhaps one or more of these needs are not satisfied in your life right now. We are here for you.
