Defining your safe space: What does safe space mean to you?

Welcome back to our blog! It’s Kim here and today I’m sharing some thoughts on how to define what a safe space means for you.

In therapy we talk a lot about the importance of safe spaces. We even include this as part of our informed consent! When I begin to work with a new client there are some responsibilities for both myself and my client. One of those responsibilities is that I ensure my office is a space where clients feel safe and comfortable so they can be open and honest with me. And in return, I can be open and honest with them.

In today’s video I share the definition of safe space in therapy, but I also encourage you to define your own safe space. What does safety really mean to you? Watch the video below or keep scrolling to explore the meaning of safe space!

What does safe space mean?

Really, a safe space is supposed to be a place where you don’t have to worry about being judged – where you can be completely yourself and still feel cared for.

But here’s the thing.

That’s my definition of a safe space. If I can be in a place where I’m able to unapologetically be myself and still feel liked, I consider that to be safe. It might not be your definition, and that’s okay.

If you do a quick Google search you’ll find similar definitions for safe space. Typically, it’s a non-judgemental space where you can go to work through the things that are vulnerable to you. And as a therapist, this is always my goal for my clients.

That being said, it’s important to know that safety can feel different for everyone, especially in a situation where you’re vulnerable. Your safe space is defined by your emotions and experiences. What feels safe for me might not feel safe for you.

Safe spaces aren’t just for therapy

There are a number of reasons why you should think about what a safe space looks and feels like for you.

If you suffer from social anxiety, what makes you feel safe to interact with friends and family? What about if you’re in a work meeting, does the room or the people who are in it make you feel safe?

Whether it be in therapy, at home or at work, having a safe space in various areas of your life is so important.
