Additionally, they discovered that lack of sleep can lead to reduced attention and focus, which in turn impairs memory performance.
Is Dementia Always the Cause of Memory Loss?
Often when people talk about memory loss, dementia is often close behind. The truth is that there are both physical and psychological causes of memory loss that don’t include dementia. Other common physical causes of memory loss can include different medications and an underactive thyroid. It is always a good idea to discuss these with a doctor.
Other reasons for memory loss include lack of quality of sleep, elevated alcohol consumptions, depression, anxiety, and stress. A conversation with a physician or a mental health provider can help towards remedying these problems.
How is Memory Affected by Sleep?
Let’s have a closer look at how our memory works. First we intake information through our senses, then it moves to short term memory, and then finally long-term memory where memories are consolidated. Sleep, particularly slow wave sleep (SWS) has been identified as a critical factor involved in the formation of long-term memory. There may be medical reasons interfering with your sleep, including but not limited to Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, cancer, and head injury. However, there are more common conditions that can interfere with memory-consolidating sleep, including depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and other mental health problems.

Working with a CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) therapist has been proven to help those struggling with sleep quality. CBT can help many people struggling with sleep problems, even if those sleep concerns are due to lifestyle habits, other mental health diagnoses (such as depression or anxiety), medical issues, or physical problems.
