The name (DOE-hass) comes from Gaelic, meaning “hope”. Although I am proudly, fully Canadian, as with most of us, I’m a Heinz 57 (a blend of a bunch of cultures), so this is a nod to my Irish roots. It’s also a nod to my mom. She and I used to share a series of books and, in one of them, the name of a shelter was Dochas. I didn’t realize this until after I chose the name and found it in the book. Weird. But I like to think it’s a sign.
So, that’s where Dochas started, with a nod to my roots and a belief in the power of hope. It’s my goal to be that safe space where you can come just as you are and be welcome. Anyone who works here shares that vision.
The truth is, in therapy there is no magic wand. It’s hard work. It works because of the relationship you build with your therapist which allows you to explore who you are and want to be. Not every therapist out there believes in this perspective. You have to pick the person who is right for you! You have the power here… this is why the site has profiles on the therapists. It gives you a brief sense of each one of us, so you can decide where you want to start.
Therapy can be scary. But it doesn’t have to be. If you have any questions, even if you aren’t sure you want to start, give Dochas a shout. My team and I would be more than happy to talk with you!
